Are you a producer that needs sounds more? Are you a guitarist who feels confined to your present VST’s or keyboards? We’ve always been there and most artists are still there, I’m still happy with what I have as being an artist. I still search for something different, or something greater than my current setup! Let’s presume you’re maker of hip hop beats/rnb tracks and you want to venture out of the box to make some different sounds and play a little bit, because unfortunately a lot of hip hop producers are producing the same sounds and all is beginning to sound more and more alike. The explanation is most producers are using VST’s! VST stands for “Internet Devices” and are not external sound boards but sounds that are created from your device.
The drawback with using VST’s is that everyone has the same equipment and not much can afford a $3k keyboard workstation like the Roland Fantom, but those that own those keyboards tend to produce a much better synthesis than those that use preset sounds in Fruity Loops.
When you’re ready to move the output to the next stage, you’ll find some awesome keyboards here! With the Roland Fantom X6, let’s start at the top, this is a complete workstation keyboard with sampling drum pads and 61 semi-weighted keys. This is the perfect keyboard for a serious, well established manufacturer! If you have one with an artist on one session, they will walk in and know exactly what keyboard you have in front of them, and will be impressed immediately!
Let’s go to something a little less pricey, the Yamah MO6 or MO8, the only difference between the two is that there are 61 semi-weighted keys and the other is 88 keys which are completely weighted. Now, in the hip hop world, this wonderful keyboard is very popular, producers like timbaland, scott stork, and eminem have produced hit records using the Motif sounds! This keyboard is a bit older, but you can find one for almost anywhere online now for under $800 and this still produces some incredible sounds! Hook this up to your DAW and set tracks or put the records together without a computer on the workstation keyboard!
Now, keeping around the price range of $1k, let ‘s move over to Korg’s keyboard section. Beginning on the Korg M50. This keyboard has some wonderful sounds that R&B and even hip hop will fit well! One thing about this keyboard is that it’s more on the experimental side, more sounds are leaning towards techno and so on, and it will require a creative mind to put some hip hop beats together, but in the end you’ll have some sounds that almost no hip hop producers have. If you’re going with Yamaha’s Motif Keyboards, you’ll find some of the most recognized sounds from early 90 ‘s records and even records from today that’s great but for someone who wants to be very original, going with a Korg M50 is almost a guarantee you’ll have unprecedented sounds, and the drum kits are amazing on that! Furthermore, strong, clean and real sounding kits would make you even more creative, given that most hip hop makers use the same kicks, claps and hats that this keyboard would encourage you to venture beyond the “comfort zone” in which we all fell.
OK so we’ve been going over some precious keyboards, maybe you’re not ready for it but you want some great sounds! One keyboard that you ought to look in is the Yamaha MM6, this keyboard has loads of sounds from the higher priced Motif keyboards we spoke to earlier and you know there’s some variety in that! It has also brought in arpeggios and effects on board so you can adjust parameters to create an original tone! This keyboard can be found brand new on websites including ebay and zzounds for under $600.
Well, we’ve gone over a few keyboards that will definitely give you a new sound and a real bang for your buck, and when it comes to investing in your business as a producer or as an artist / musician these keyboards are all worth the money you ‘re spending on them.
